Five level maintenance and five points for attention of Cummins Engine

Cummins engine displacement 1.4-91 liters, power range 31-3500 horsepower, widely used in heavy trucks, medium trucks, buses, recreational RV, light commercial vehicles and pickup trucks and other road vehicles, as well as engineering machinery, mining equipment, agricultural machinery, ships and railways and other non road equipment.

Cummins engine is not only famous in the industry for its first-class reliability, durability and fuel economy, but also has been in the leading position in the industry to meet the increasingly stringent competition of automobile emission, off-road motor equipment emission and marine engine emission. The maintenance and operation precautions of Cummins engine are as follows:

1、 Precautions

Dongfeng Cummins engine (20-200kw)

(1) Cummins engine normal starting requirements

a. Cummins starter shall not run for more than 30s each time, and the interval of restart is 2min.

b. The lubricating oil pressure shall reach 70kpa within 15 seconds after starting, otherwise, check the oil level immediately.

c. After starting, idle speed can only be added for 3-5min, otherwise, the bearing bush will be short of oil supply.

d. Idle speed cannot exceed 10min, otherwise, there will be some bad phenomena such as carbon accumulation in combustion chamber and oil leakage of Cummins engine supercharger.

e. Cummins engine water temperature should not be lower than 60 ℃, otherwise the fuel will enter the oil and damage the lubrication. The water temperature can be increased by accelerating the idle vehicle.

f. Keep idling after starting in winter until the water temperature indicator pointer turns or enters operation after 10min. Observe the water temperature gauge and pay attention to whether the oil pressure gauge meets the requirements. When using auxiliary starting fluid in winter, it is necessary to use a sprayer with a quantity of holes.

(2) Cummins Engine basic operation requirements

a. In Cummins engine operation, the instrument should be observed frequently: the water temperature should be between 74 ℃ -91 ℃; the oil pressure should be greater than 70kpa at idle speed, and 276-517kpa when the temperature is above 1200R / min.

b. If Cummins Engine overheats, reduce load operation. If the load is still overheating after a period of operation, stop the load and check the fault.

c. During Cummins engine operation, the following changes of the engine shall be paid close attention. If any of them suddenly changes, it is likely to be a warning of failure. Please check and repair them in time.

① The engine is extinguished or on fire is poor; ② vibration; ③ the engine has abnormal noise; ④ the working pressure and temperature of the engine suddenly change; ⑤ the exhaust smoke of the engine is too large; ⑥ the engine power is insufficient; ⑦ the oil consumption becomes larger; ⑧ the fuel consumption becomes larger; ⑨ fuel, oil or water leakage.

(3) Cummins engine operating range

a. When Cummins engine is lower than the maximum torque speed, the full throttle operation should not exceed 30s, otherwise, the overhaul life of the engine will be shortened and the engine may be seriously damaged. Cummins engine works best above the maximum torque speed point, so it is recommended to run Cummins engine in this range.

b. In no case or environment, Cummins engines should not run at the maximum idle speed.

(4) Cummins engine running in cold environment

Special oil, fuel and coolant shall be used when running the engine in extremely cold environment.

(5) Cummins engine shutdown

a. Cummins engine is required to idle for 3-5min before the engine is stopped. Because the engine idles for 3-5min before each shutdown, the oil can take away the heat from the combustion chamber, bearing and oil seal, especially the supercharger. If the machine stops suddenly, the bearing and oil seal are likely to bite.

b. Cummins engine can be shut down by cutting off the current of the fuel pump solenoid.

2、 Maintenance of Cummins Engine

Cummins Isle series engine

Maintenance is the key to reduce the cost of use. A diesel engine needs to be maintained regularly according to the maintenance schedule in order to keep it running effectively. Preventive maintenance is the easiest and most economical maintenance. It allows the maintenance department to work at the right time. The maintenance period and content of different series and models of engines are slightly different. Please refer to the engine service manual for specific conditions. The maintenance period and contents of the N and K series engines are briefly introduced.

(1) Class a maintenance inspection (daily inspection)

Daily engine work daily, to be provided to maintenance department.

① Report contents: 1) whether the oil pressure is low; 2) whether the power is insufficient; 3) whether the cooling water or oil temperature is abnormal; 4) whether the engine sound is abnormal; 5) whether the smoke is emitted; 6) whether the coolant, fuel or oil is over consumed; 7) whether the coolant, fuel or oil leaks.

② Check engine: 1) check engine oil level; 2) check engine coolant level.

③ Check the water pump belt;

④ Check the marine gearbox;

⑤ Check the engine for leakage, bruise, looseness, etc.

(2) Class a maintenance inspection (weekly inspection)

① Repeat daily checks every week.

② Check air filter and air intake resistance: clean or replace air filter element.

③ Drain the water from the air reservoir.

④ Release sediment from the tank.

(3) Maintenance inspection level B

Cycle: chart method or 250h, 6 months or mileage of 16000km. During each level B maintenance inspection, all class a inspection items shall be completed, plus the following items:

1) Change engine oil:

① Start the engine to reach the working temperature, then stop the engine and drain the oil;

② Install and playback oil plug;

③ Check the oil gauge to make the oil level reach the mark "H";

④ Start the engine and visually check for oil leakage;

⑤ Stop for 15min and check the oil level.

2) Replace filter:

① Full flow oil filter;

② Bypass oil filter;

③ Fuel filter.

3) Check the coolant: check the concentration of DCA of engine coolant, replace the core and add dca4 additive if necessary

4) Check the oil level.

5) Clean or replace crankcase ventilator and air compressor ventilator.

6) Check the zinc plug.

(4) Maintenance inspection level C

The maintenance inspection period is 1500h, 1 year or mileage is 96000km.

During each level C maintenance inspection, all class A and B inspection items shall be completed, plus adjustment of injector stroke and valve clearance.

① "Cold adjustment": the engine shall be shut down for at least 4 hours at the ambient temperature to be adjusted to achieve a stable temperature;

② "Heat regulation": the engine oil temperature is operated for at least 10 minutes under the condition of above 99 ℃, or the fuel injector and valve shall be adjusted immediately after the normal oil temperature is reached.

The adjustment of injector stroke and valve clearance of Cummins engine must be done by specially trained personnel.

(5) Maintenance inspection level D

The maintenance inspection period is 4500h, 2 years or the mileage is 288000km.

During each d-level maintenance inspection, all level a, B and C inspection items shall be completed, plus the following items:

① Clean and calibrate the fuel injectors, fuel pumps.

② Check, repair or replace the supercharger, damper, air compressor.

③ Repair or replace Fan Yi, water pump belt tensioner assembly and water pump.
